I think the most difficult aspect of my project so far has been the data layer collection. Because my project spans between two counties (Los Angeles and Ventura County) I have to deal not one, but two different databases and shortcomings. Although it has been a long and tiresome process of looking through the countless (endless) tabs of shapefiles and different layers, I can safely say that the worst is behind me and I can focus on the just the actual GIS tools and functions. Open source GIS layers are definitely a blessing but also not straightforward. If I didn’t have the support and guidance from my advisors and mentors I have a feeling I would still be circling back through the county tabs in an endless search for county structures!
